Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Schmitt started the season in a first base platoon but suffered an oblique injury in mid-April, sidelining him for a month. After returning from the IL, he became the primary third baseman while Matt Chapman was out. In late June, he was hit by a pitch on the hand, leading to another IL stint. After a brief absence, Schmitt played nearly every day, primarily at second base. Despite some skill improvements, his production did not match his Statcast expected numbers. His barrel and hard-hit rates are average, and his strikeout rate is slightly elevated. With similar OPS marks against left- and right-handers, he profiles better as a utility option and struggles in full-time action, so it wasn't a major surprise when the Giants added Luis Arraez to start at second base. Now positioned for a utility role, Schmitt is expected to be healthy by Opening Day after undergoing off-season wrist surgery. Read Past Outlooks

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Schmitt opened 2024 in the minors and never received consistent opportunities with the Giants, but he performed well at the plate when called upon with six homers and a .760 OPS in 40 games. He also enjoyed a strong campaign at Triple-A Sacramento, where he had 13 home runs, 11 steals and a .271/.340/.466 slash line in 74 contests. He saw action at second base, third base and shortstop, but all three positions are locked down after San Francisco signed Willy Adames in December. Schmitt should open 2025 as a reserve infielder for the Giants and likely won't have a regular role if the big-league infield stays healthy.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Option at both 3B and SS
Schmitt will continue to get reps at shortstop and might be a long-term answer there for the Giants, per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Analysis
Schmitt has primarily played third base since the Giants selected him in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft, but he did see time at short last year in High-A ball and the club's talent evaluators think he has the defensive skills to handle the position. The 24-year-old is on track to make his MLB debut in 2023 after climbing to Triple-A Sacramento for a brief cup of coffee to finish out the 2022 campaign. Maybe he could eventually take over for 36-year-old impending free agent shortstop Brandon Crawford in San Francisco.
