2025 Fantasy Outlook
Spiers split time between the minors and majors in 2024, making 18 starts and an additional 13 appearances as a reliever. The right-hander excelled at Triple-A Louisville, where he was used as a starter, posting a 2.51 ERA while lowering walk and home run rates. His results in the majors, however, were less glamorous either as a starter or reliever. As a starter, MLB hitters crushed 16 homers off him in just 51.2 innings. The numbers were slightly better coming out of the bullpen, but those appearances were primarily as an inning-eater in low-leverage situations. He's likely to begin 2025 in the rotation at Louisville, as he did last season, and provide starting depth for the Reds. Read Past Outlooks

Needs Tommy John surgery
Reds manager Terry Francona said Saturday that Spiers will require season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, Pat Brennan of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Analysis
Spiers had been in the midst of a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville while working his way back from a shoulder impingement, but he was pulled off the assignment about a week ago after experiencing soreness in his right biceps. He underwent a couple of MRIs since then, and a second opinion confirmed that Tommy John surgery was necessary. No date has been set for Spiers' procedure, but the surgery will be performed by renowned arm specialist Dr. Keith Meister. In addition to missing the remainder of the season, Spiers will be at risk of missing the entire 2026 campaign as well.

Spiers fared well in his second go-round at Double-A Chattanooga in 2023 and was needed for MLB innings during the Reds' push for the postseason in September. In the minors, the right-hander's walk rate inched up, but Speirs' improved location within the strike zone resulted in a better strikeout percentage and significantly lowered home run rate. Desperate for pitching help in the majors, the Reds summoned Spiers from Double-A for four appearances (two starts) that went predictably awry. Spiers' name will be mentioned when talking about the team's starting depth, but he could spend the entire season in the minors.
