After a standout 2023, Doval took major steps backwards last season. His 14.4 percent walk rate was second worst among relief pitchers, which attributed to inflated ratios (4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) and an eventual demotion from closing duties. Doval was even optioned to the minors for a few weeks, but the 27-year-old still led San Francisco with 23 saves (T-10th in the league) and a 63.9 percent team save share that ranked 13th among closers. The only thing working for Doval was his slider (.184 BAA, 45 percent whiff rate), and he threw the pitch more than 50 percent of the time. Unfortunately, his cutter (.284 BAA, .552 SLG) and sinker (.375 BAA, .531 SLG) got crushed, the latter regressing significantly since its introduction in 2022. Doval should give Ryan Walker competition for the closer role during spring training. Improving his command would go a long way towards reclaiming at least a share of the role he once held. Earns first save as a Yankee
Doval earned the save in Saturday's 5-3 win over the White Sox, allowing one unearned run in a hitless 11th inning.
                  Analysis
Called upon in the 11th inning to protect a three-run lead, Doval worked around an RBI groundout by Will Robertson but faced the minimum amount of hitters to lock down his 16th save of the season, and his first since being acquired by New York. The outing was another encouraging step (his fourth straight appearance without an earned run allowed) for the right-hander, who entered Saturday with a 5.23 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and two blown saves in two chances since joining the Yankees.

				2022
Tied for 2nd in the majors with a career-high 39 saves, Doval cemented himself as one of the top closers in the game last season. After introducing a sinker to his aresenal during the second-half of 2022, the pitch wasn't as effective last year (.303 BAA), but Doval generated a career-best 49.3% whiff rate on his slider, while his 100-mph cutter was the best it has ever been. The 26-year-old struck out far more batters with his cutter than years past, with 36 of his career-high 87 strikeouts coming via the pitch. Still, Doval mixed his three pitches quite evenly, making it more difficult for opposing hitters to predict what was coming. Walks are still an issue for Doval, leading to a higher WHIP than you'd like to see for a closer, but he balances that out with a 50-plus perecent groundball rate. Doval led qualified relievers with a 2.14 gmLI and he has little competition in San Francisco, thus making him a back-end top 10 closer for 2024.

Doval is drawing significant trade interest, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
                  Analysis
The Giants are not committed to selling even as they currently six five games out of a wild-card spot, but they could deal from their bullpen -- which has been a strength -- while still clinging to faint playoff hopes. Doval has been the Giants' primary closer this season, collecting 15 saves while posting a 3.15 ERA and 47:24 K:BB over 45.2 innings. He is under team control through 2027.
