2026 Fantasy Outlook
Diaz was the first Reds reliever off the board for most of 2025 draft season until he exhibited command issues during spring training. A hamstring injury was to blame, but the lack of endorsement as the Reds' closer from new manager Terry Francona quickly removed Diaz from draft consideration, while those who already clicked his name sent him to the waiver wire. While Diaz's hamstring injury impacted his mechanics, his performance never recovered once he was healthy enough to pitch. The Reds quickly lost confidence in the 28-year-old and traded him to the Dodgers, with whom he also struggled. He was eventually DFA'd by Los Angeles, only to be claimed and DFA'd again by Atlanta within the span of a few weeks. After struggling to an 8.15 ERA, 1.53 WHIP over 17.2 innings last season, Diaz will get a chance to turn things around with Texas in 2026. He'll likely need to display some consistency before the Rangers consider using him in high-leverage situations regularly. Read Past Outlooks

The Rangers outrighted Diaz to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
Analysis
After signing a one-year deal with Texas in December, Diaz entered spring training with a chance to stake his claim to the closer job in an unsettled bullpen. The right-hander's lack of command during spring training ultimately resulted in him not only falling short of a high-leverage role, but a spot on the 40-man roster. He'll remain in the Texas organization after drawing no interest on the waiver wire, having yielded eight earned runs on three hits and four walks over 1.2 innings in the Cactus League.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Diaz's performance was rocky at times in 2024, but his stability as the Reds closer was always high. The right-hander finished with 28 saves in 32 chances and a 77.8 percent team save share, both of which ranked ninth in the league. The velocity on his four-seamer (94 mph) dipped for the second consecutive year, but the pitch yielded better results than his slider, which was reflected in its usage (58 percent - a +9.5% difference from 2023). Diaz's perennially poor walk rate (12.8 percent) and plummeting K-rate (22.7 percent) attributed to a higher WHIP (1.30), which may not sit well with new manager Tito Francona. However, working in Diaz's favor for 2025 is the current lack of competition within his own bullpen. He'll likely open the season as Cincinnati's closer, but his leash may not be as long as it was under David Bell.
Diaz emerged last year as one of the best closers for fantasy purposes, boasting nine wins and 37 saves with solid ratios and a 30% strikeout rate. While his save total was fourth highest in the majors, Diaz only accounted for 69.8% of the Reds' 53 saves. Cincinnati was more competitive last year, but led the league in one-run games and recorded a save in a league-leading 64.6% of their 82 wins. As such, expecting Diaz to approach the 40-save mark again in 2024 might be a mistake, especially given the 27-year-old's perennially high walk rate. Diaz did adjust his pitch usage, opting to throw far more sliders (51.5% usage) than he did in 2022 (35.2%). It was one of the best sliders in baseball per Statcast Run Value (16), while his four-seamer lost some velocity (-1.2 mph) and wasn't as effective. Diaz also faded down the stretch, possibly due to a career-high 71 appearances. Look for him to be one of the top 10 closers off the board, but don't lock in a repeat of last season's stats.
Diaz bypassed Triple-A entirely, making the jump from Double-A to the majors last season after making the Reds roster out of spring training. Edwin's younger brother quickly emerged as a key bullpen piece for Cincinnati, going from middle relief to high leverage by mid May. Both his fastball (65% usage) and slider (35%) were extremely effective, as his xBA was in the 99th percentile while his strikeout and whiff rates were also elite. Not all was great, as the rookie had a high walk rate (12.9%), and an extreme fly ball percentage (54.5%) that yielded a .178 BABIP that was second lowest among qualified relievers. Ultimately, Diaz was a stabilizing presence within an otherwise inconsistent bullpen. He should be the favorite to close games for the Reds to start 2023, but keep in mind David Bell has deployed a committee the last two years and several injured relievers (Antone, Sims, Santillan) will be returning next season.
