Lange saved 26 games for the Tigers back in 2023 but has saved just two since then, making just one big-league appearance last year while battling a lat injury. He owns a 1.83 WHIP and 18.8 percent walk rate since the start of the 2024 season, and even back in 2023, his 1.33 WHIP and 15.6 percent walk rate were poor. Lange earned a save against the Rangers on Tuesday, walking one batter and striking out two over one scoreless inning.
Analysis
Lange was called upon to close things out with Kansas City up by two runs in the ninth inning. The right-hander threw just 10 of 19 pitches for strikes, hurled a wild pitch and walked a batter, but he also struck out the final two batters he faced and got out of the frame without allowing any runs. Lange now has four of the Royals' past five saves and is clearly the team's preferred ninth-inning option. He's earned that role by registering nine consecutive scoreless outings. Since April 22, Lange has a 1.77 ERA and 17:10 K:BB over 20.1 innings spanning 20 appearances.

After leading the Tigers with 26 saves in 2023, Lange took a step back last season, in part due to injury. He started the year in the mix for saves once again, but he was demoted to Triple-A Toledo in May as he struggled with walks and overall effectiveness. The righty then suffered a right lat avulsion a few weeks after his demotion, which brought his campaign to a close following surgery. Lange is optimistic that he'll be back to full health for the start of spring training, though he's been bypassed by Jason Foley, Tyler Holton and others in Detroit's bullpen pecking order. At his best, Lange has the ability to miss plenty of bats. However, control remains an issue, as he's walked a whopping 62 batters across 84.2 innings since the start of the 2023 season. That won't get it done no matter how many strikeouts he racks up, so Lange will need to display a better command of the strike zone before he regains a high-leverage role.
