2026 Fantasy Outlook
Following a couple down years in 2023 and 2024 that saw him deliver a .685 OPS, Kirk got back on track last season with a career-high 15 home runs and a .282/.341/.421 slash line in 130 games. He had career bests in average exit velocity (91.1 mph) and hard-hit rate (50.8 percent), with a .283 xBA and .468 xSLG indicating that he may have deserved a bit more power production. The counting stats (76 RBI and 45 runs scored) leave a bit to be desired, particularly when considering the strength of the lineup around him, but he's never likely to be a notable run scorer given his abysmal speed. Kirk offers fantasy managers a high average with decent RBI numbers at a position without a lot of offensive depth. However, the fact he's never played more than 139 games in a season is an indication he won't quite have the volume of a true everyday catcher. Read Past Outlooks
Facing six-week absence
Kirk underwent surgery Tuesday to have a screw inserted into his fractured left thumb and is expected to be sidelined about six weeks, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Kirk sustained the injury Friday when he was struck in the thumb by a foul tip, and the Blue Jays didn't waste any time placing him on the injured list. The 27-year-old should be able to rejoin the active roster in mid-May, assuming his recovery progresses as expected. Tyler Heineman and Brandon Valenzuela will handle the catching duties for Toronto in the meantime.

2021
It would be worrisome if 2022 ends up being Kirk's offensive peak, but it is certainly looking that way after a second consecutive disappointing season at the plate. He did not hit his second homer of the season until June, and his third did not come until August. By season's end, Kirk had managed to score just 23 times despite a .319 OBP and 386 plate appearances. The last player to score so few runs with that playing time was Miguel Cabrera over the last two seasons of his career, as he scored a total of 46 times over that two-year span. Kirk continues to have excellent strike-zone discipline and puts the ball in play, which is why he is in the top 20 for grounding into double plays despite much fewer plate appearances than those in front of him on that list. Kirk remains an excellent defensive presence behind the plate with his framing and blocking abilities, even as the league takes liberties running against him with 60 or more steals allowed in each of the last two seasons. The starting catcher job is his to keep, as the organization does not have anyone banging down the door, especially with the departure of Danny Jansen. The opportunity is there for Kirk, but he needs to end this two-year run of disappointing production.
